The Senate is currently debating whether to irreversibly destroy America’s health care system. Within a few weeks we will decide whether to ration health care, increase cost and cripple the economy by passing Obamacare or whether we reject ideological solutions and go back to examine the issues around cost, access and coverage and develop solutions based on individual freedom and choice and on free markets.
John Stossel presented the issues around health care two years ago on 20/20 which is available in a six-part video series. He takes on filmmaker Michael Moore who created a propaganda movie praising Cuba’s communist health care system. The issues remain the same. Stossel explores what is wrong with how we currently pay for health care, how government-run systems make these issues worse and how we can make our health care system better.
Given the proposed bill that contains tons of government mandates and a government option (“public option”) that will drive much of private health insurance out of business, part 3 of Stossel’s series is the most critical part to watch. Stossel covers a lot of issues in an hour of television. One issue with the current system that he did not have time to cover is defensive medicine and the need for tort reform.
Right now the immediate need is to defeat the Obama / Reid / Pelosi takeover of health care by the federal government. These include Arkansas’ Blanche Lincoln, Indiana’s Evan Bayh, and Nebraska’s Ben Nelson.
Once this is accomplished, America can start a discussion of how to genuinely reform the system through free market reforms to lower health care costs and increase coverage.
