Democrats’ Only Remaining Campaign Strategy: Run from the Issues and Engage in Personal Smears

October 18, 2010

All across the country Democrats have been running from the issues. They don’t want to talk about the policies they have supported: the Obama stimulus, Obamacare, the massive increase in spending and the across the board income tax increase scheduled to take effect January 1, 2011 to name just a few.

Instead Democrats resort to personal attacks describing their opponents as “extremists”, making up blatant lies about their opponents’ positions and engaging in outright personal smears. Harry Reid calls Sharron Angle’s Reagan Republican views “extreme.” Charlie Crist lies about Marco Rubio’s position on Social Security. Crazy Florida Congressman Alan Grayson runs deceptive ads linking his opponent to the Taliban. And these are just a few recent examples.

We should not let Democrats get away with these dirty tactics, but we also should not linger on them. A firm rejections of the attack should be followed by a quick return to the issues that matter to voters: reducing the size and power of government and reversing the laws passed during the past two years.

Kentucky Senate candidate Rand Paul did just then in a Sunday night debate when he responded to his opponent’s smears forcefully and then moved on to talk about who has the “best vision for America:”

When this debate ends you will notice that I will not be shaking his hand tonight. I will not shake hands with someone who attack my religion and attacks my Christian beliefs. These are something very personal to me. My wife, my kids, we take it very personally and I will not be associated with someone who will attack my religion.

This election will be about the future of America. Who has the best vision? We will try to keep the debate on a higher tone. I hope he will leave my church, my family and my religion out of it.

But who has the best vision for America? Do you believe government is always the answer or do you believe in the people? Do you believe in the individual entrepreneur, the individual business man and woman to create jobs? I believe in the individual. I believe in capitalism. I believe we are the greatest nation ever known to man. We are the most humanitarian nation every known to man and I will defend those rights. I will keep government out of the way of business.

Thank you very much for coming this evening. Thank you for your support.
