Global Warming

President Obama needs to pay more attention to what his own government is reporting. Alan Reynolds of the Cato Institute reports (via HotAir):

…health inflation per se is projected to be 2.8% this year — comparable to other labor-intensive service industries and also down from 3.2% in 2009 and 3% in 2008. Morevoer, “out-of-pocket spending is projected to have grown 2.1 percent in 2009, down from 2.8% in 2008.”

What about all the uninformed media fuss about health insurance companies supposedly “asking for” premium increases of “up to” 39%?

If President Obama really wanted to find out how quickly typical health insurance premiums have been increasing, he could have a staffer call the Bureau of Labor Statistics and ask for Table 3A of the “Consumer Price Index Detailed Report Tables Annual Averages 2009.” It turns out the consumer price index for health insurance premiums fell by 3.2% in 2009.

Obamacare would reverse this and cause an increase in premiums.

Global Warming Meltdown

February 23, 2010

Here is the follow up television special by John Coleman, founder of the Weather Channel, on the global warming meltdown after Climategate.

{ 0 comments }

Here is a recent program skeptical of global warming narrated by John Coleman, founder of the Weather Channel. It points out that ice core studies show that carbon dioxide (CO2) increases after periods of warming, not the other way around.

Part 2: More scientists and a little survey of people’s views on global warming.

Part 3: Increasing CO2 in the atmosphere increases plant growth and will therefore let agriculture be more productive. The origins of global warming and Al Gore’s early inspiration from Roger Revelle, a scientist who studied the increase of CO2 in the atmosphere, but had doubts about whether this would cause global warming.

Part 4: A continuation of the history of the UN’s global warming agenda going back to the 1970s. Natural sources of continuous climate change.

Part 5: Ice melting, the explosion of the polar bear population and Al Gore’s exaggerated claims about rising sea levels.

Part 6: On the manipulation of temperature data at US government climate centers.

Part 7: A continuing discussion about the elimination of weather stations especially in colder regions and extrapolation of temperatures.

John Coleman has a second special on the global warming meltdown that Florida Pundit will post shortly.

al gore frozen2 479x400 300x250 The Continuing Crisis of Global Warming ScienceTwo articles published in British newspapers this past weekend blow further holes into the argument that global temperatures are rising due to human activity.

The Times reports that many weather stations have recorded rising temperatures due to urban heat islands rather than a natural rise in temperatures.

“The temperature records cannot be relied on as indicators of global change,” said John Christy, professor of atmospheric science at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, a former lead author on the IPCC.

The doubts of Christy and a number of other researchers focus on the thousands of weather stations around the world, which have been used to collect temperature data over the past 150 years.

These stations, they believe, have been seriously compromised by factors such as urbanisation, changes in land use and, in many cases, being moved from site to site.

Christy has published research papers looking at these effects in three different regions: east Africa, and the American states of California and Alabama.

“The story is the same for each one,” he said. “The popular data sets show a lot of warming but the apparent temperature rise was actually caused by local factors affecting the weather stations, such as land development.”

The IPCC faces similar criticisms from Ross McKitrick, professor of economics at the University of Guelph, Canada, who was invited by the panel to review its last report.

The experience turned him into a strong critic and he has since published a research paper questioning its methods.

“We concluded, with overwhelming statistical significance, that the IPCC’s climate data are contaminated with surface effects from industrialisation and data quality problems. These add up to a large warming bias,” he said.

Such warnings are supported by a study of US weather stations co-written by Anthony Watts, an American meteorologist and climate change sceptic.

His study, which has not been peer reviewed, is illustrated with photographs of weather stations in locations where their readings are distorted by heat-generating equipment.

Some are next to air- conditioning units or are on waste treatment plants. One of the most infamous shows a weather station next to a waste incinerator.

Watts has also found examples overseas, such as the weather station at Rome airport, which catches the hot exhaust fumes emitted by taxiing jets.

In Britain, a weather station at Manchester airport was built when the surrounding land was mainly fields but is now surrounded by heat-generating buildings.

Here is a picture of the weather station at Rome airport right behind a runway for planes taking off (Source: Watts Up With That?):

Meanwhile, Phil Jones, one of the scientists at the center of the Climategate scandal, made some startling admissions in an interview with the BBC. The Daily Mail reports:

Professor Jones told the BBC yesterday there was truth in the observations of colleagues that he lacked organisational skills, that his office was swamped with piles of paper and that his record keeping is ‘not as good as it should be’.

The data is crucial to the famous ‘hockey stick graph’ used by climate change advocates to support the theory.

Professor Jones also conceded the possibility that the world was warmer in medieval times than now – suggesting global warming may not be a man-made phenomenon.

And he said that for the past 15 years there has been no ‘statistically significant’ warming.

dcsnow 300x196 Snow Storm Benefit: Federal Government Closed 3 Days in a Row

Americans are experiencing an unprecedented benefit from the heavy snowstorms that have hit Washington, DC. Federal government offices closed early on Friday, where closed Monday and Tuesday and will continue to be closed on Wednesday.

The federal government closed for more than half a week! If you believe in the role of the federal government advocated by left-wing Democrats and the Obama administration, you would think that Americans all over the country are suffering because Big Brother in Washington is shut down.

Instead the only effect the Washington Post can come up with is that each day the government is shut down costs about $100 million in “lost productivity and opportunity costs.” I guess we pay Washington bureaucrats even when they are not working which seems more like a net benefit than an “opportunity cost.”

On Monday, the Obama administration called for the creation of a new federal office to study and report on global warming. The irony of the timing of the announcement is apparently lost on the Obama administration.

The London Times reports that the head of the IPCC knew that claims in the IPCC report about Himalayan glaciers melting were false before the December 2009 Copenhagen Global Warming Summit:

The chairman of the leading climate change watchdog was informed that claims about melting Himalayan glaciers were false before the Copenhagen summit, The Times has learnt.

Rajendra Pachauri was told that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assessment that the glaciers would disappear by 2035 was wrong, but he waited two months to correct it. He failed to act despite learning that the claim had been refuted by several leading glaciologists.

The IPCC’s report underpinned the proposals at Copenhagen for drastic cuts in global emissions.

Dr Pachauri, who played a leading role at the summit, corrected the error last week after coming under media pressure. He told The Times on January 22 that he had only known about the error for a few days. He said: “I became aware of this when it was reported in the media about ten days ago. Before that, it was really not made known. Nobody brought it to my attention. There were statements, but we never looked at this 2035 number.”

Asked whether he had deliberately kept silent about the error to avoid embarrassment at Copenhagen, he said: “That’s ridiculous. It never came to my attention before the Copenhagen summit. It wasn’t in the public sphere.”

However, a prominent science journalist said that he had asked Dr Pachauri about the 2035 error last November. Pallava Bagla, who writes for Science journal, said he had asked Dr Pachauri about the error. He said that Dr Pachauri had replied: “I don’t have anything to add on glaciers.”

The Himalayan glaciers are so thick and at such high altitude that most glaciologists believe they would take several hundred years to melt at the present rate. Some are growing and many show little sign of change.

Dr Pachauri had previously dismissed a report by the Indian Government which said that glaciers might not be melting as much as had been feared. He described the report, which did not mention the 2035 error, as “voodoo science”.

Meanwhile, the British government has ruled that climate scientists have broken the law by not complying with Freedom of Information Act laws:

Finally, Osama bin Laden has become the latest convert to global warming. The Associated Press reports (via Minnesotans for Global Warming):

osama bin laden 1998 thumb Climategate Updates: Pre Copenhagen Cover Up, Breaking the Law and A Strange New Convert

Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden has called in a new audiotape for the world to boycott American goods and the U.S. dollar, blaming the United States and other industrialized countries for global warming.

In the tape, aired in part on Al-Jazeera television Friday, bin Laden warns of the dangers of climate change and says that the way to stop it is to bring “the wheels of the American economy” to a halt.

He says the world should “stop consuming American products” and “refrain from using the dollar,” according to a transcript on Al-Jazeera’s Web site.

Living in a cave, bin Laden apparently has not heard about Climategate and the latest revelations on false claims made by global warming scientists.

Seeking to broaden his appeal, it is only a matter of time until bin Laden advocates for terrorists to go green and use non-carbon emitting bombs.

Gore in Copenhagen 150x150 Climate Scandal of the Day: Claims About the Disappearing Amazon Rain Forest The news for the global warming movement just keeps getting worse. Yesterday, I discussed two scandals from last week and other troubling recent revelations regarding the credibility of the UN’s IPCC report and the global warming movement.

Today, the Telegraph provides details on another claim by the IPCC that doesn’t meet the standard of peer-reviewed science. Here is the IPCC claim about the threat that portions of the Amazon rain forest could rapidly vanish:

amazon 1 Climate Scandal of the Day: Claims About the Disappearing Amazon Rain Forest

The paper cited was published by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and can be found here. The authors, Andy Rowell and P.F. Moore, turn out to be a freelance journalist and a policy analyst.

It gets worse. The Telegraph reports:

But the IPCC’s shamelessness did not end there. Dr North has searched the WWF’s reports high and low but can find no evidence of a statement to support the IPCC’s claim that “40 per cent” of the Amazon is threatened by climate change. (Logging and farm expansion are a much more plausible threat).

Watts Up with That? reports that this is not just another isolated incident and finds dozens of WWF papers that were used to support claims in the IPCC report.

…it turns out that the WWF is cited all over the IPCC AR4 report, and as you know, WWF does not produce peer reviewed science, they produce opinion papers in line with their vision. Yet IPCC’s rules are such that they are supposed to rely on peer reviewed science only. It appears they’ve violated that rule dozens of times…

The IPCC and Al Gore won the 2007 Nobel Prize for Peace for their work. Unfortunately, there is no mechanism for a recall.

Climategate has resulted in more scrutiny of the IPCC reports and global warming claims in general. However, this information was available before Climategate and the fact that journalists did not pick through the IPCC reports prior to Climategate demonstrates the bias or naive acceptance of global warming claims by much of the media.

What else will we find if journalists continue to go back to look at the scientific basis of the last decade or two of global warming claims?
